Torrevieja (the old tower).
Like many Spanish resorts, Torrevieja was once a sleepy fishing village, destroyed by an earthquake in the 1920's, rebuilt and has subsequently become one of the best known resorts on the Southern Costa Blanca today, with a population reaching into the 200,000's & much higher at holiday and Fiesta times. Torrevieja is the Orihuela Costa's nearest neighbour to the north.Torrevieja, like much of the Costa Blanca was a Moorish outpost to defend the Country against the Christian Invasion, but Torrevieja now thrives as a bustling Mecca for a vast array of Spaniards, Eurpoeans from many different Countries, both as a home, place of business and to the hundreds of thousands of visitors it receives each year, as it sweeps along the Mediterranean and meets with La Mata (North) and Punta Prima (South), at the start of the Orihuela Costa.
Torrevieja is a vibrant, ecelectic mix of locals and foreigners alike, and is probably the next best known resort to Benidorm. Crammed full of people all going about the daily business of the area, Torrevieja attracts a plethora of visitors from all around the globe. It is one of the most established holiday resorts known to Europeans on the Southern Costa Blanca and is used as a marker for people finding their way South to the Orihuela Costa and beyond & North, towards places like Alicante, Benidorm and the Northern Costa Blanca.

Salt of the Earth. The salt lakes of Torrevieja.
If there is one thing that Torrevieja is famous for, then it has to be it's Salt Lakes. The Torrevieja Salt Lakes are still a major producer of salt today, shipped world wide.
Historically, Torrevieja was built on the strength and prosperity of the salt lakes and they are still a major income of the town.
These sprawlling, vast lakes, one of which still produces and the other now a nature reserve, add an eerie, mystique to the landscape.
The biggest of the 2 lakes (the pink one) is like a gigantic pink lake, creating what could almost be described as a river based border between Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa, the vibrant pink of the lakes even casting a pink glow on overhead clouds.
The other salt lake (the blue one), is smaller and now a reserve for birdlife, plants and flowers and other life, native to the area.
Torrevieja even boasts a Salt Museum, where you can catch all of the history of the lakes, how the town prospered due to their existance and some sculptures created from the salt.
