Get Fit....Stay Fit. Health & Fitness on Orihuela Costa.
The Orihuela Costa along with the rest of the Costa Blanca, already, due to it's climate, concentration of salty, clean air and being on the Mediterranean, of course, is a very healthy place to live.However, it doesn't hurt to maybe make that extra effort and try to get into a fitness programme, whether it be jogging on the beaches or the coastal path (which can be very rocky in places), cycling, walking or joining one of the gyms that are on offer along the Orihuela Costa.
As the saying goes...'Mens sana in coropre sano', roughly translates as 'A healthy body in a healthy mind'.

On the Orihuela Costa, the best known gyms are Maxx Gym, Playa Flamenca, next to the Town Hall and Sophia Wellness Centre in Cabo Roig (just off of the N332) and OK Gym, Los Dolses (Villamartin), although there are other gyms available and other exercise classes too.
Maxx Gym (www.maxxgym.es) offers over 200 sq. m of floor space and a broad range of equipment, classes, therapies, sunbed and sauna, as well as a health encouraging cafe, serving fruits, herbal teas, health drinks and energy drinks along with a range of supplements alonside a wide range of other services.
Maxx Gym also provide a range of exercise based events each summer on the beaches of Orihuela Costa, grand affairs with hundreds of participants and the chance to get that little bit healthier, possibly lose some weight (if you want to of course) and make lots of new friends at the same time.

A MARATHON TO SUCCESS.
On June 20th, Maxx Gym, Playa Flamenca, sponsored by the Ayuntiamento (Town Hall) and a host of local businesses (including the Orihuela Costa dot com team), held the first of five special health & fitmness events, on the Paseo of Playa Flamenca.
The event was to promote health and fitness in the area and was a resounding success.
Hundreds of people attended, with just under 300 participants in the events of the evening, which included Body Combat, Hip Hop demonstrations, Comtemporary Dance, Aerobic Exercise and much more besides.
" We are very happy at the success of the event and for the amount of people of all ages that attended and participated", told Evelin Scapari, Manager at Maxx Gym. " This event could not have been the success it was without the participants".
Despite the looming dark clouds overhead, no rain fell and attendees were treated to an Body Building Display from Bernhart Scorus, ex Bodybuilding Champion of the world, currently a personal trainer at Maxx Gym.
This vibrant and exciting event was rounded off with a whole array of prizes given out for participation and two special prizes to the oldest and youngest participants and a prize draw finished the evening off for no doubt, some very exhausted ( and probably sore) individuals.
Maxx Gym are holding another FOUR special events, the next one being a Spin-athon, at Playa Flamenca.
Anyone wishing to attend, needs to register at Maxx Gym, Playa Flamenca by Friday 3rd July.

:: Sophia Wellness Centre (sophiawellness.com) offers toning machines, a range of classes and power assisted exercise for ladies only. Sophia Wellness have branches in Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada also.
Both offer competitive pricing structures and a range of passes to suit those who live here, on business, on holiday or just for a day.
:: O.K. Gym offers pretty much of the same, for men & women, witha great range of classes and has occasional charity events (like the spin-a-thon in Sept. 2008).
That said, if getting sweaty and exercising outdoors is your thing, then here on the Orihuela Costa, there are also a whole host of outdoor activities that you can participate in, from a gentle stroll along the coastal path (great for getting up an appetite), walking along the Aguamarina (Cabo Roig), swimming in your urbanistaion pool or the cooling waters of the Mediterranean, Tai-Chi, Yoga Classes outdoors or even just some gentle stretching out and breathing exercises on any of the beaches. These all aid you to a have a healthier attitude to life, ease stress and keep you fitter and sharper, with more energy and stamina.

Fitness, Health & Diet.
It's not really worth you doing all that fitness regime if you are going to stuff your face with chips and beer (although if you are, than at least you're trying to keep the weight down).
If you are joining any of the gyms on the Orihuela Costa, ask for some dietary advice from the staff to gear you toward a more complete health & fitness plan.
Remember, keeping healthy isn't just about exercise...it helps to eat and drink well also.
Drink plenty of water at the gym, cut down on the sugary drinks & snacks and opt for fruits and low fat snacks.

Remember that Spain is a hot country. Drink plenty of fluids when exercising, more so, if you are outside (water particularly).
- Know your limits
If you are getting tired, take a breather, or stop. If you are in a group, keeping healthy is not a competition.
- Keep Cool. Chose your time of day to exercise.
Jogging at midday in the heat of the summer sun isn't a great idea really.
Workout in an air-conditioned gym, or if you are outside then exercise in the early morning or the cool of the evenings.
That way you can avoid heatstroke or worse.
- Listen to the professionals.
If you are joining a gym,particular class or fitness centre listen to the advice given at your induction to your chosen gym.
These people are experienced professionals and advice being given is to assist you get the best from their facilities.
