Pets O.C. Your Petcare on the Orihuela Costa.
Bringing your pet or pets to another country can be a frustrating experience if you don't know what you need to do and how you need to do it. Even if you are purchasing a Pet here on the Orihuela Costa or the Costa Blanca or anywhere else in Spain for that matter, it is always best to seek adcive from those who know......i.e. a Vet or your local Town Hall.In Spain, there are certain rules for bringing pets into, haveing them here and also maving them around Europe (in particular to the U.K. & Ireland).
Obviously many Countries have their own indiginous, bugs, pests and diseases, partibularly in a hot climate like Southern Spain, so you should get your pet to your chosen vet for a full healthcheck and to gain some valuable advice about what the partcular needs of your pet may be, from a possible change of diet, to some precautionary vaccinations to advice about paritcular avoidances when out with your pet (for example - the Processionary Caterpillar).
Vetting The Vets.
Chosing your Vet is akin to choosing your own Doctor or Dentist. You want someone who is frendly, professional and (hopefully) not too expensive, along with being easy to reach, especially in an emergency (there are special emergency Veterinary services on the Costa Blanca).
Here Is The Good News !
Here on the Orihuela Costa and Spain, petcare is well priced, Vets are friendly, most have excellent reputations, are highly professional and many of them will speak English, if you cannot speak Spanish. (but please try).
There are large Petcare emporiums (like Petsworld), who have everything that you will need to care for your pet, from Dog & Cat food & treats, fish of all sorts, beds, baskets, leads etc etc, all the way to in-house surgery and are very affordable and are highly professional.
What Your Pet Needs.
- They Need Microchip I.D. & Passport.
All pets are now microchipped. A Pet Passport will identify your pet and the passport number will correspond to the chip. Many pets have an identificaion number tattooed onto their inner ear, but although currntly valid, this form of identification is being phased out in July 2011. - Vaccination Book.
An up to date record of all vaccinations must be kept. - Certificate of Purchase / Sale.
If you buy a pet, then you must have the sale document. Speak to your Vet if you are unsure about this. - Pedigree Document.
Pedigree Pets are registered and you need the document & Family history of the pedigree. - Up to Date Vaccines.
Although Rabies is rarely heard of, it still exists on mainland Europe and it is important that your pet (Dogs & Cats) has a yearly rabies vaccine booster.
If you want to take your pet to the UK or Ireland, then there are special rules that have to be followed, so please check with your vet.
RABIES VACCINE IS MANDATORY AND MUST BE KEPT UP TO DATE.
Other important yearly vaccines are:- - Heartworm (Filariosis).
Carried by Mosquitoes, this is a parasite that gets into the heart (arterial vessel). This can be a fatal disease, so it is wise to get your pet vaccinated. - Feline Gastro Inteitritis & Typhus.
This applies to cats.
Taking your Pet Away.
Moving your Pet to the UK & Ireland.
If you wish to take a pet (dog or cat) to the U.K. or Ireland, then there are necessary steps that you have to take in order to save you time, trouble and heartache in your journey.
Very Important !
RABIES, RABIES, RABIES!!!
Your pet MUST have undergone a FULL Rabies vaccination programme before being allowed into the U.K. or Ireland.
This consists of:-
A Positive blood test for the vaccine successfully working in the animal.
A wait of 6 months from the result of the blood test.
Also:
Your pet must be have had and certified:-
Tick & Flea Treatment no more than 72 hours BEFORE entry to U.K. or Irish soil.
Your Mode Of Transport.
Most people with pets, either visiting the U.K. & Ireland, or returning back there, choose a mixture of Road & Sea, as this is usually always the cheapest form of transport.
While it takes longer, the cost is considerably less and more senic too.
If you choose to fly your pet, then you should contact the airline or airlines that you are thinking of using to find out their terms & conditions and costs involved, as flying a dog or cat can be very expensive.
Other Relevant Information.
Dangerous Dogs.
The rules on dangerous dogs and, what classifications of dangerous dogs there are, vary form region to region. It is always best to check with the local Town Hall or your vet for what constitutes a dangerous dog here on the Orihuela Costa and the Communidad de Valencia.
If you own what is considered to be a dangerous dog, you need to have a special licence and your dog or dogs MUST be registered with the Municipality (Town Hall). The licence needs to be renewed every 5 years.
There are also some other rules regarding liability insurance, proof of ownership, status of the owner (i.e. no criminal record or past convictions) and other requirements besides. Failure to comply with these laws may result in a conviction & the possibility of the destruction of the dog.
Foul Play. Cleaning up your Dog Mess.
Sadly, here on the Orihuela Costa and much of Spain, the issueof Dog mess on the streets is a big one. There are too many people who are only too happy to let Fifi or Mimi crap in the streets and then just walk off and leave it behind them, to the dismay of both non-dog owners and responsible dog owners. What makes it worse is that individuals leave their dog's poos around childrens playgrounds and other areas where small children may pick it up, or fall into it, with the disease possibilities endless.
Bottom line to all of you who do....IT IS ILLEGAL !
There are sign appearing around the area informing people that they can be fined if caught leaving dog mess around and to be honest, they deserve it.
Common courtesy and responsibility should tell anyone that leaving dog poo on the streets just is plain WRONG.
The O.C. team plead to the better nature of these people and ask nicely..
PICK UP YOUR DOG MESS
That way we will have cleaner streets, hopefully less flies and reduce the risks of little ones catching anything from it.
You have been warned.
