News on the Orihuela Costa. Local news stories.

The O.C. team love the local press, so our news section is really just to remind people about local major news events that have happened or that will be happening.
Always check out the local media for the most up-to-date news stories about what is happening, has happened and will be happening on and around the Orihuela Costa.

October 2009. Sport for all.

A new Multi-function Sports Centre is set to open on The Orihuela Costa  at some point in 2010, it was recently announced.
The complex, located near the Playa Flamenca Centre will boast:-Two tennis courts, three paddle courts, two Multisport courts and a full-size football field which will include a grandstand with room for 400 spectators on one of the sides.

There will also be a  jogging track that circles the entire plot, with a length of 550 metres and a width of 3 metres and an indoor heated swimming pool.

The Sports Centre will have disabled access, allowing everyone to utilise the services.

September 2009. Taxing Times Ahead.

The Government has announced a series of Tax rises for 2010.
The rises will affect everyone, as one of the main changes is a rise in I.V.A. (VAT) from JULY 1st 2010.
  • The 16% taxation band (full IVA) will rise to 18%
  • The 7% reduced band will rise to 8%
  • The super-reduced band of 4% will remain the same
  • Tax on interest paid on savings and investments (rendimiento de capital)would rise from 18% to 19% for the first €6,000 and to 21% for amounts after that.

There will also be changes to Income Tax
A reduction currently in existance which reduces annual personal income tax for many workers by €400 would be cancelled in 2010.

On a slightly brighter note, a decision was taken to reduce the tax burden for smaller companies.
PYMES with fless than 25 employees and an income of less than €5,000,000 per year will benefit from tax cuts of up to 5% off  of ompany tax if they maintain or increase their average staff over three years.
A similar measure has been announced for Autonomos (self employed).

September 2009. Important Changes for U.K. State Pension holders & EHIC.

Important changes have been announced by the British Consulate that affect U.K. State pension holders who use an EHIC Card.
This is set to change next year when the UK(and not Spain) will become responsible for issuing the EHIC to UK pensioners resident in other EU countries. The UK is finalising its processes for the implementation of the new regulations. When these processes have been finalised, they will be contacting everyone concerned in all member states.

The planned introduction date for these cahnges is 1st May 2010, although it is known that the INSS has issued some EHICs to people due to expire on 28th February 2010, Those plan to travel before the new regulations come into effect, you should contact the INSS regarding an extension to your EHIC. click here for more information (source fco.gov.uk)

August 2009. All Malled Out ?

It appears that a proposed Shopping Mall in La Zenia (near Via Parks I & II), will be going ahead, with Home imporvement giants, Leroy Merlin looking to be one of the major stores.
The Mall aims to boost the local economy with the direct and indirect creation of roughly 3000 jobs and has been roumored to provisionaly contain a Cinema, Bowling Alley, Food Court and high street brands.

August 2009. N332 alternative completed.

The Orihuela Costa stretch of road that runs parallel to the N332, but slightly inland from the Orihuela Costa was opened.
A road bridge linking both sides of the AP 7 motorway now means that there is an alternative road between Los Balcones and Cabo Roig, without having to use the N332. This makes access to places like Campoamor & Villamartin easier for those who are slightly inland.

July 2009. Bridging the Gaps.

With the recent extension of the Orihuela Costa ctretch on the N332 into dual carriageway, a series of footbridges have been erected to maintain safety to pedestrians, wishing to cross it.
These have been erected in:-
  • Punta Prima (existing foot bridge replaced)
  • La Zenia (at the roundabout)
  • Cabo Roig (at the roundabout)
  • Dehesa de Campoamor (near the Cepsa Garages - where most incidents had taken place previously)

There is a proposed footbridge for Almeda del Mar (Playa Flamenca), but an installation date has not been agreed as yet.
Residents in Cabo Roig have protested at the lack of a foot bridge near the Centro Salud, as no bridge had been proposed for there and the general consensus is that a road bridge with a small pavement is not entirely safe.

June 2009. N332 goes Dual Carriageway.

The Orihuela Costa stretch of the N332 between Punta Prima and Pilar de la Horadada has finally opened after years of tailbacks, frustration, bottlenecks and planning.
Although one of the worst stretches of the N332 (from Punta Prima to La Mata) has yet to be completed, the Orihuela Costa stretch has definitely reduced traffic queues and traffic flow is more regular.
